The Rev. Charlie Camlin: “Wrestling with God” (Genesis 32:27-28)
Have you ever wrestled with God, or with what His Word tells you to do? Probably none of us will ever wrestle with God in the way that Jacob found himself doing in Genesis 32–but the fine sermon Wrestling with God by the Rev. Charlie Camlin of Holy Trinity REC in Virginia applies truths from that account to our own lives. As Fr. Camlin says,
The passage which we have read this morning for our Old Testament lesson is probably one of the best known stories in all of Genesis. But it is a mysterious and deep passage. My experience with a passage such as this in Scripture is that it can often be one of the most edifying if we are willing to prayerfully meditate upon what is being said. Far from being just some story for Sunday school children, there are some wonderful truths embedded in this passage.
If you have the time, Fr. Camlin does indeed tell us about these “wonderful truths” – please check it out.
Will – Did you get your package?
Rob,
Yes, I did get it, and thank you very, very much. Will try to contact you Monday evening if that is an OK time for you.
Excellent sermon by Fr. Camlin…I especially like his concluding paragraph…
“My brothers and sisters, as Christians, God has promised to bless us. But too often we miss out on God’s blessings because we want to do things our way. And our ways are most often not His ways! Let us learn from Jacob’s wrestling match that we too must humble ourselves before God. God has called us to a life of submission. We must submit to live our lives walking in His ways if we would be blessed. Let us cling to Him in faith—trusting Him to provide all that we need along the way. For if we belong to Him and refuse to submit, He may engage us in a wrestling match to bring us into submission. And after that wrestling match, we may walk away limping.”
This sermon sent me back to Fr. Bill Klock’s sermon from 2006 on the same passage…it can be found here…

Thanks for the reminder about Fr. Bill’s sermon…it does indeed cover that same lesson from Scripture. Always great to hear different “takes” on the Word when we can learn additional truths from those passages.
