Dr. J.I. Packer on the ESV Study Bible
2008 September 22
If one is considering the purchase of a new Bible, I would urge you to consider the ESV Study Bible, which should be available shortly. Here is a video of Dr. J.I. Packer, one of the editors, talking about this new edition. Notice the list of 95 contributors to the study notes for this Bible; it is exemplary indeed.
I still haven’t got my act together to buy an ESV, so this might be the cue to do so.
You know, I already have an ESV and I am tempted by this one. (sigh)
I’m not usually a big fan of study Bibles. A friend once said that study Bibles are meant to push doctrine you wouldn’t otherwise find simply by reading the text. I guess there’s some truth in that. However, after being at a conference and seeing a mock-up of this using John’s Gospel I was duly pleased and impressed. I preordered mine this past Spring. I’m not sure how much use it will get, but what I saw knocked my socks off.

Fr. Bill,
I do have to agree to some extent with what your friend said; as an example I can use myself, because the first study Bible I ever had was the Scofield Reference Bible (or whatever it was called) and it was full of dispensationalist material. Consequently I can attest firsthand to the need to be sure that one picks a study Bible that meets one’s own needs. But I can say also that a good study Bible is indispensable for me in a Sunday School class and in my own studies, and this one, the ESV Study Bible, appears to be solid–particularly based on what you say–so I will quite likely order it. Thanks for your most helpful comment.
