Dan Phillips of “Pyromaniacs”: “You can go your own way”

August 25, 2006

I found You can go your own way by Dan Phillips of the Pyromaniacs blog to be a much needed reminder of how much we need the grace of God. This brief excerpt looks at the differing attitudes of rebels and saints:

The rebel’s greatest fear is that he would be denied the desires of his heart. The saint’s is that he would be abandoned to his.

Were God to offer the option, the first would bellow “Yes!”, even as the other screamed “No!”

And this, at bottom, is the stark demarcation between the heart left to itself, and the heart made alive by the sovereign grace of God in Jesus Christ (Romans 1:18-32; Ephesians 2:1ff.).

As Jeremiah 17:9 says, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? It is only by the grace of God that this can be overcome; as Rev. Phillips says at the end of his post, “Dear God, whatever You do, don’t let us go our own way.”
