The Rev. Richard Turnbull: “Living as the people of God” (1 Peter 2:1-12)

May 31, 2010

From the Rev. Richard Turnbull, preaching at St. Mary’s Church, Basingstoke in the United Kingdom, we have the audio sermon Living as the people of God, based on 1 Peter 2:1-12. This is the fifth in a series of sermons to be preached on the First Epistle of Peter, and Rev. Turnbull basically has three main divisions:

  • we are to seek spiritual maturity (verses 1-3);
  • the centrality of Christ (verses 4-8), and
  • we are all called to testify (verses 9-12).

One major point he makes about verses 1-3 is that “craving pure spiritual milk” means the same thing as “hungering and thirsting after righteousness.”  One thing for certain: if we do not hunger and thirst after righteousness, we are not growing into spiritual maturity, and probably we need to be asking ourselves whether we are hungering and thirsting after unrighteousness.  This is another good message from yet another U.K. church with which I am impressed – and thankful – regarding the quality of their preaching.
