From Uncommon Knowledge: Dr. Thomas Sowell on American Collapse, Part 4

August 24, 2010

In this installment of the series of interviews with Dr. Thomas Sowell, he makes it clear that he believes that if the Obama agenda is not stopped in the November 2010 elections, it may never be stopped. Indeed, he compares this November to the battle of Tours between Charles Martel and the Moslem invaders of Europe in 732. Had not the Franks prevailed in that battle, the history of the world would likely have been quite different. November 2010 may have that degree of significance.

    Will,
Dr. Sowell is one of my favorites from over the years. Not only a learned man, but a wise one. This video is serie is actually getting a fair amount of attention, as it should. I’m glad you are highlighting it, insamuch as what he is discussing visa vis the direction and ultimate risks for the U.S. is sobering and a wake-up call.
    cheers,
    Jack

    Brother Will,

Many thanks for running this interview series.

I first ran across Tom Sowell through one of his books some 30 years ago. The book is “A Conflict of Visions”, a study of the thought of Admam Smith and Thomas Godwin. A fascinating book.

Another book worth reading, if you can find a copy, is Christopher Dawson, “The Judgement of the Nations”, written during the war. An intriguing quote, which I first saw in one of Dick Francis’ novels: “As soon as men decide that all means are permitted to fight an evil, then their good becomes indistinguishable from the evil they set out to destroy.” This is a necessary cautionary note to ‘just war’ theory.

    Jack and Benton,

I first really became acquainted with Dr. Sowell when I read his powerful The Economics and Politics of Race in 1993 or thereabouts. To my mind his approach in that book gives us a sound and reasonable way in which to think about racial matters, and I have been an admirer of his ever since. It is because of his intellect and common sense that I see the need to highlight these videos; if Dr. Sowell is concerned about these matters, I think all of us should at least listen and ponder what he has to say.

I’ll look for that Dawson book; I am not familiar with the author but the book sounds good!

Christopher Dawson is the RC historian. The book I cite is one of his earlier books. I had quite a time finding it; turned out to be the only copy available in the USA and, possibly, Britain or elsewhere. Lots of luck finding a copy. Probably a copy available throuygh Inter Library Loan?
