Now available: “The Books of Homilies : a Critical Edition” by Gerald Bray

May 21, 2016

Every now and then someone will ask about The Books of Homilies and whether there is a modern version of that work.  As it happens Michael Lilly left a comment on the blog and advised that there is a text that came out in January of this year – “The Books of Homilies: a Critical Edition” by Prof. Gerald Bray.  It is a bit pricey in hardcover but I can assure you that anything by Prof. Bray is worth reading, if you are looking for material on this topic.

Thanks to Michael for mentioning this.

Paperback is coming out next year and should be cheaper but by how much is anybody’s guess. I cannot tell from the publisher website whether Bray is updating the language of the Homilies or Neely providing his analysis along with the original text of the Homilies?

My understanding was that Dr. Bray was updating the language of the Homilies – but that is just a guess as it is a little out of my price range. But if there is a paperback that comes out and it is more affordable, I might be able to answer that question better! Thanks for the news about the paperback – I think that is great.
