An excellent idea: EFAC-USA (Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion)

February 28, 2017

I wanted to call attention to an organization that I believe is an excellent idea – EFAC-USA, the Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion.  (Their Facebook page is here.)  Their stated purpose and goals are:

EFAC-USA is a gathering of Evangelicals in the Episcopal and Anglican churches for networking, prayer, Bible study, worship, and mutual encouragement in Gospel ministry, both as lay and ordained ministers of the Gospel.

Our goals are as follows:

To encourage and provide training for Biblical preaching and teaching in the Episcopal and Anglican churches.

To foster fellowship among Evangelicals in the Anglican and Episcopal churches, and to promote cooperation among all who recognize the ultimate authority of Scripture in matters of faith and practice.

To teach and practice evangelism as a Biblical priority.

To foster liturgy and worship consistent with the Gospel.

To encourage committed, gifted Evangelicals to enter full time ministry and to support and encourage them during their training and first placement.

I will also mention that they are having a conference near Orlando, Florida April 19-21 that is titled “Positively Evangelical: the 2017 EFAC USA Conference” and will be a “chance to exchange ideas, be encouraged, be refreshed, hear great talks, and worship together with other evangelicals in the Episcopal and Anglican churches at a peaceful and beautiful location.”  This looks like a wonderful conference and if you are interested you can find out more on their website.

EFAC is not exactly new. I was active in the NY area EFAC back in the days before the election of the IXth Bishop of New Hampshire. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude for sharing and encouraging the faith that now sustains my life. Sadly, EFAC was damaged during the “stay-leave” culture wars as PECUSA devolved into alphabet soup (and “Protestant” became an embarrassing word all over the new map, both in and out of what is now called TEC).
I am very pleased to see that an accommodation has been reached to allow an even-handed TEC/Continuing Anglican condominium on the new EFAC board of directors. EFAC can once again welcome all of us in the classic Anglican tradition denoted by this use of the label, “Evangelical,” and reach out to inspire a new generation of believers.
Let’s be honest, there were and are not enough of us to be able to afford continuing recriminations and turf wars. I am sad that important years of work have now been largely lost, but I am excited at this new start.
I look forward to attending April’s conference.

Eric, thank you for your comment – very helpful. You are in agreement with what my source had told me about this being something of a “revival” effort for EFAC, and I really hope it works out for the glory of God.

It is my understanding that ACNA will be involved as well as TEC.

(It is indeed a bit of a shock to me that the word “Protestant” has become such a term of embarrassment in some quarters, but you are certainly right about that.)

I hope you are blessed by that conference in April.

Interesting idea! Hope and pray the group is successful in its witness.
