A brief quote from Bonhoeffer’s students in seminary

September 15, 2018

This week I have been reading in a book by Dr. Paul R. House of Beeson Divinity School titled Bonhoeffer’s Seminary Vision: A Case for Costly Discipleship and Life Together.  This is quite a thought-provoking book and I may have comments about it in the future, but here is a quote he has from a report made by Bonhoeffer’s students at Finkenwalde in 1935:

Discipleship is the unconditional, sole commitment to Jesus Christ and thus to the cross, a commitment whose content cannot wholly be articulated. The place to which the church is called is the cross, and the only form in which the church can exist is discipleship.
You can certainly hear echoes of The Cost of Discipleship here.  Can you imagine the impact Bonhoeffer must have had on those students?
